This morning I filmed two more episodes of Mass For You At Home. They won’t be screened until September. This time, some Hamilton parishioners – holidaying in Melbourne – accompanied me. Andrew and Taryn and Lauren joined the congregation. Bailey served.
But first, we had to stop by the dreaded makeup department. Back when I served for Fr Withoos, I had to wear makeup for all two minutes of my airtime. I thought Bailey would be my brother in solidarity. But no! He was spared that cruel fate, and instead the whole family watched in amusement while I was tortured. They even took photos!
I’m prepared to admit I’m engaging in some mild hyperbole. But I can say in all seriousness that I have new respect for women, who afflict themselves with makeup every day. I salute you!
We moved from makeup to the studio, where I was greeted by an old friend from the seminary, Fr Andrew McCarter, who is a newly ordained priest for the Archdiocese of Melbourne. I guess the masses he celebrated will be screened in August.
There are no embarrassing incidents to report this time. Which is not to say I didn’t make mistakes! It’s just that they weren’t noticeable. (Says I. Perhaps Channel Ten’s mailbag will prove otherwise!)
There was a Redemptorist priest on set last week and today. John someone. I forgot his name. But this evening I mentioned him to Bishop Paul Bird, who is a Redemptorist himself.
“Oh yes, John Hill,” the bishop replied. “He’s a scripture scholar, you know. He teaches at the Yarra Theological Union.”
Thankfully, I did not know. It’s always slightly unnerving preaching to a congregation which includes priests. I think it’s a peer thing. (Preaching in the seminary, to brother seminarians, was even worse!)
If I had known that a scripture scholar had been on set while I was delivering 4 minute ferverinos, I might have been reduced to a quivering wreck! The makeup, the floor director, the lights and the cameras are one thing. But scripture scholars!? My word!
The kids enjoyed a tour of the Channel Ten studios afterwards. Not a bad way to cap off a trip to the city!
Congratulations Fr john! I knew you could do it. You look kinda cute with your foundation! I hate foundation.lol! Say Hi to Fr Andrew. I think I will send him an email.
I agree with Florence Fr John, you look cute with your foundation on. How are you going to live this down?
next time tell the makeup artist that she left too much shine on your nose.. tut tut tut .
I was afraid of this! I thought if I struck preemptively, and joked about it first, I might avoid this sort of fun. But Florence and Anne have proved me wrong!
Important messages to tell you all.
Firstly if you live in Country Victoria I know in Western Victoria they show Mass For You At Home on Eleven not on TEN at 5.30am. Too early! Might need to tape it! It is easy if you have a t-box or watch on their website, but it down at the moment.
Another thing: Fr. Michael Casey, who was on the news a few weeks ago because someone broke his window (something like that), is also on Mass For You At Home.
I can remember a couple renewed their wedding vows once on air! Well I used to watch Mass For You At Home when I was a little boy. Then I got back watching it in 2007.
Also on Sundays there’s Mass on the radio. This is done in Geelong by Fr Kevin Dillon on two radio stations: Light FM 89.9 at 7am, and the Pulse FM 94.7 at 10am. The Pulse is a better version. It goes for a full hour. You even the important church messages for the week! I must admit it worth going to St. Marys in Geelong. It is on my list! You need a few hours to have good look.
Then on Vision FM or AM in the Melbourne there is show called Catholic Print. Peter Byrne reads Catholic articles from all over the world at 7am or at 5.30pm.
Then there is Sunday nights on ABC starts on 10pm to 2am. The host is John Cleary. He talks about all sorts of religion. He has quiz and talks about all different stuff. A few weeks ago he had Fr Richard Leonard talking about movies! (He is a Jesuit priest and has been in Rome but has been on Mass For You At Home too.)
Then is also the popular show Compass on ABC TV.
Well dont’t worry Fr. John. The Collingwood players put make up when they did the biggest ad few years ago!
Priests always used to say, “well one day we will get the new the wording of the Mass right.” “Well,” I said to myself, “if I don’t have missal in front of me and I don’t know whether you have mistakes or not, only God and you know. I am sure God will understand.”
God Bless all the priests who have been on Mass For You At Home. Our parish used to have masses at different homes. One of them was our home! Maybe this is where they got idea from now. Masses are in nursing homes, gardens, racecourses, prisons, schools, and many locations all around our beauiful world!
Now wait a minute! “Important messages to you all”?? Whose blog is this — mine or yours, Simon the Pieman? Next thing I know, you’ll be a guest blogger whose posts are more popular than mine, just like Joel — and it’s no coincidence you haven’t heard from him for a while!
Ha ha. Just kidding mate. This post is very informative. I might reproduce it in a post tomorrow. Thanks for your research!
Incidentally, Joel will be living and working in Fr Michael Casey’s parish in 2012. Small world!
This picture is of Bishop Paul Bird the bishop of Ballarat and Fr. Bill Van de Camp at Port Fairy blessing of the fleet!
Go to the Warrnambool Standard website and look for gallery then look for Moyneia festival and you will find more photos of blessing of the fleet and people looking at cars!
